Timberwolves Win Again -- On to State Semi-Finals

The teams lined up before the game began at Bemidji State.  This was their first game where they had to come from behind, scoring in the last quarter to win 19 to 14.

The next game will be played on Friday, November 6 at 5 pm Ely time.  Listen live online at WELY.com.
And a full spread of Eric Sherman's game photos will be featured in next week's Ely Echo.
Congratulations, Timberwolves!

Fall in the Northwoods

Autumn is a special time around Ely.  The leaves are turning bright yellows, reds and oranges, the bugs are gone and the weather is becoming chilly -- it is a great time to be outdoors.
Jacopo, his host dad and some friends recently hiked some of the trails around Big Bear Lake.

And we are proud to announce that the football team is undefeated as they move into post-season play.  Jacopo's point-after and field goal kicks added lots of points each game.

Trying Golf

Here is a short video from Jacopo, showing him learning to play golf.  The first person you see is his host Dad, Pat Warner, demonstrating how to tee off.  Jacopo calls this "A funny video of me missing the golf ball."

Ely Timberwolves' football team continued their winning ways tonight with a 57-6 final score.  The game was notable as Jacopo's first time on the field for a game.  He scored with a field goal.  This photo shows him with teammate Preston Leustek.
And here he is with the other seniors on the team.

This photo was taken at one of the regular team practice sessions prior to the September 25th game.

In-Bound Exchange Student Fall Get Together

The Exchange Students for our district had the opportunity to meet each other and share experiences this weekend.

As can be seen with the array of flags, they are a very diverse group.  The friendships they made this weekend span the globe.  Pictures by Exchange Student Malene Holmen Andersen.

Here he is again, in a photo taken by Adam Růžička, with Kazuki Hirose, Malene Holmen Andersen, Tangkwa Apinya Simasathien, Veera Kuurimo, Victor Hugo Israel, Jacopo Mercanti, Amanda Alvarenga and Josefa Silva in Bemidji, Minnesota.

End of Summer Fun in Minnesota

The State Fair is a great way to end the summer.

Jacopo got to enjoy the rides and saw lots of Minnesota icons, like the University of Minnesota mascot, the Gopher.

He also had a trip to the city of Duluth, stopping in Tofte for lunch and a walk along the shore of Lake Superior, one of the Great Lakes.

While in Duluth he visited the "I Love Duluth" store and sat awhile in the big moose chair.

Back home on Bear Island Lake, Jacopo has had warm weather to enjoy some water sports.  Tubing is popular in Minnesota and Paddle Boards are becoming more common every day.

Jacopo's Ely Host Family and Home

Jacopo's Host Family lives outside Ely at Bear Island Lake.

This photo shows what it will look like this winter.

And this picture shows their view of Bear Island Lake at sunset.

The weather has been perfect for fishing this weekend, so Jacopo and his host family went out on Bear Island Lake.  Walleye, Northern Pike, Small Mouth and Large Mouth Bass are some of the fish we go for at this time of year -- and here is Jacopo's first catch - a nice bass.

Welcome, Jacopo!

Jacopo attended his first meeting of the Ely Rotary Club on August 26.  He came with his Host Dad, Pat Warner, and was met by the club's Student Exchange Coordinator, Jean Peshel.

Dessert for the lunch meeting was a cake welcoming Jacopo.
For his stay in Ely, the club is using the English version of Jacopo's name and will be calling him "Jacob."
School does not start in Ely until after the Labor Day holiday September 7th, however Jacopo will be visiting Ely Memorial High School this week to get registered for classes and to ask about joining the football team.  Ely does not have a soccer team, but his kicking skills will be an asset to the football squad.
